Investing in Alberta

In the 2010 decade, Total will invest up to $20 billion in Alberta’s economy and grow to 1,500 employees, to fulfill our goal of becoming a leading producer in Canada’s oil sands. The Voyageur Upgrader Project plays a key role in helping us achieve our goal.

Economic Spin-offs and Increased Upgrading Capacity

The strategic alliance Total has formed with Suncor to jointly develop the Project in Fort McMurray ensures the capital investment, employment, and government taxes/royalties derived from this multimillion dollar project will benefit all Albertans.

The proposed Suncor-operated Voyageur Upgrader will produce 200,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil. It will process Total’s Fort Hills and Joslyn bitumen production.

Total’s strategic partnership with Suncor allows Total to realize its oil sands production ambitions on an earlier timeframe. The Voyageur Upgrader and Fort Hills assets will be developed in parallel so that both can come on stream in 2016. The main engineering and procurement contracts for these two projects will be awarded in 2011. As a result of this strategic alliance—and once the official agreement is executed—Total will no longer proceed with the planned construction of its own upgrader in Strathcona County, near Edmonton.

Total’s partnership in Voyageur is an example of how Total works collaboratively with leading energy companies around the world to ensure responsible energy production.
