Land Conservation
At Total E&P Canada, we plan for the reclamation of the land at the same time as we plan for project development. Consistent with this commitment to sustainable resource development, and our desire to address stakeholder concerns, Total took the voluntary initiative to ensure 56 hectares (138 acres) of conservation land was set aside in the boreal region of Alberta. And we plan to do more. We will ensure an additional 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of conservation land will be set aside as an offset for our Joslyn Asset.
Fast Facts
- The Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) is a not-for-profit charitable organization formed in 1997.
- Annually, ACA directs more than $10 million towards conservation efforts.
- Key ACA conservation programs include Wildlife, Fisheries, Land Management and Communications.
In 2007 Total partnered with Alberta Conservation Association
(ACA) on their boreal habitat conservation initiative, a program to help offset environmental footprints made by companies in the Athabasca Oil Sands.
In 2008, Total E&P Canada provided for the purchase of a 56 hectare (138 acre) conservation offset near Hubert Lake Provincial Wildlife Park in the boreal natural region of Alberta. This offset was endorsed by the Pembina Institute and the Oil Sands Environment Coalition as a terrestrial conservation offset. As with all ACA owned properties, this terrestrial offset will be managed for wildlife habitat and is open for public access.
The parcel of land Total has provided is within two kilometres of previously purchased conservation land by Suncor, and as such, contributes to a larger region of preserved boreal forest.
