Environmental Stewardship

While the Athabasca Oil Sands offer substantial potential to meet the global energy demand, their development raises complex environmental challenges.

The projects operated by Total E&P Canada are in the design and engineering phase, and will benefit from the best commercially achievable technologies. The objective is to minimize the effects on land, water and air. To do so, our Calgary Research Centre is leveraging expertise acquired from Total projects around the world and working in partnership with Canadian universities and research institutions to bring the most effective technology solutions to our oil sands projects.

We are also involved in regional stakeholder initiatives and conservation offsets to reduce our environmental impact.

Green Attitude in our Offices

Total green attitude at TEP Canada

Total E&P Canada’s Green Attitude Campaign was launched in June 2009. The campaign encourages employees to reduce their personal environmental footprint. The company provides a framework and resources to help employees make a positive environmental impact at work.

At our Calgary headquarters, we are also working with top experts to improve the environmental footprint of our business operations. We will also incorporate, wherever possible, LEED principles and criteria in the design of our new construction projects. For example, with our Joslyn Asset the LEED criterion was used in the pre-project work and will be used in the engineering phase as well.

ISO 14001

Since 2005, Total SA has been using the international ISO 14001-compliant Environmental Management System (EMS) at each of our main production sites. At Total E&P Canada, we will adopt these same quality standards for our Athabasca projects, working with stakeholders and various agencies to achieve the mutual goal of environmentally responsible development.
