Message from Jean-Michel Gires [bio]
Total established a presence in Canada in 1999, and has since built a strong team and a good portfolio of oil sands projects. Our goal is to become a leading operator in the Athabasca Oil Sands by 2020. To achieve our goal, we have embarked on one of the largest investment projects in Total SA’s history. Over the 2010 decade, Total will make up to a $20 billion capital investment into Alberta’s economy and will hire an additional 1,500 staff.
As part of the Total energy group, Total E&P Canada is able to draw on 80 years of exploration and production experience from 40 different countries. We are bringing financial resources, management experience in major project development and technical knowledge to our Canadian oil sands operations. At the same time we are able to learn from our experienced Canadian colleagues through industry associations, and develop new technologies through our Canadian research partnerships.
At Total E&P Canada, we talk about securing not only our regulatory license to operate, but also our social license to keep operating. We must merit the respect and trust of our stakeholders and create value for everyone affected by our business.
— Jean-Michel Gires, President & CEO, Total E&P Canada
We know our success and long-term growth as a company is linked to good management and strong sustainable development practices. The Athabasca Oil Sands offer a substantial energy resource for the world, but their development raises complex environmental challenges.
Our responsibility is to build our business right and deliver top economic, social and environmental performance, while supporting the communities in which we live and work. That is what we are known for globally, and we will continue to cultivate that same reputation here. At Total E&P Canada, we talk about securing not only our regulatory license to operate, but also our social license to keep operating. We must merit the respect and trust of our stakeholders and create value for everyone affected by our business.
We are committed to the long-term sustainable development of the Athabasca Oil Sands, and we are working hard to fulfill our responsibilities as we grow our company.
